Volkswagen’s city car picks up! another award
The Volkswagen up! has picked up yet another award, this time by winning the inaugural MoneySupermarket.com car of the year competition.
MoneySupermarket.com approached wheelworldreviews.co.uk back in August and asked them to be one of a select number of online judges for its new competition; naming the top 10 cars of the past 12 months. Every nomination resulted in a model being awarded between one and 10 points (10 points for being the top choice of one of the judges and nine points for 2nd etc.), with MoneySupermarket.com then collating all of the results to come up with a definitive top 10 that best represents the opinions of the online motoring community.
The VW up! was a popular choice amongst almost all of the judges, with wheelworldreviews.co.uk praising it for its “clever packaging” and “great economy”. Indeed it was these two categories which seemed to weigh most on judges minds, with the BMW 320d coming a close second thanks to its fuel efficient design and the Range Rover Evoque coming third due to its highly-applauded stylish exterior design. The VW up! victory seems to owe to it managing to combine these two essential ingredients at a time when fuel prices are of the upmost importance to motorists.
Overall the competition was dominated by German manufacturers, with German car brands picking up more than twice as many points as Japanese manufacturers who were a distant second. The most popular Japanese model on the final list was the Toyota GT86 which came in fourth. This was coincidentally the same position it occupied on the Wheelworldreviews.co.uk list of nominations.
The most popular brand in terms of overall points accumulated was BMW, who had four separate vehicles appear in the overall list of nominations. Skoda were a surprising second but this owes much to the victory points awarded from the Skoda Citigo (which is the same basic car as the VW up!); but they were still a daunting 37 points behind their German rival.
MoneySupermarket has produced the following infographic highlighting the final top 10 in what it hopes will be a long-running competition which continues to be voted on by the most knowledgeable and respected online motoring experts:
